Adventures in Dog Walking

One of the great things I've always heard about getting a dog was how social it kind of forced you to be when you were out walking your dog. While I'm all for being social, I guess I was imagining frequently chatting up super cute boys who couldn't resist my adorable puppy and therefore be completely mesmerized and captivated by me (hey, it could happen). Of course, there are cute boys out there, but I find that I'm primarily having to chat up people I'd probably never talk to in a million years. Not that there's anything wrong with them...I just don't think we'd ever have a reason to talk otherwise. But if our dogs are playing together, I'm left standing there having no idea what to say. I mean, I'm not a dog person, I don't know what breed their dog is (and I always seem to guess wrong), and I feel like I'm just reaching for anything witty or interesting to say.
There are a few ladies I've talked to that I really enjoy, but one keeps saying my name and, of course, I forgot hers instantly (not on purpose, it just somehow escaped my memory). The more she says my name, the worse I feel. I do know her dog's name...does that count? I need to find some sort of "Dog Walking Socializing For Dummies" book - it exists, right?
